You can sheath the shed using high-grade pine boards. If pine is not easily available in your region, you can also use cedar. Cedar is more rot and weather resistant compared to pine, but it is also more costly. Plywood can also be used for the sheathing. The outer walls can be shingled for better durability depending on your garden shed blueprints.

The roof of the storage shed will need 5 sets of shingles made of asphalt. You can also use cedar shingles but they would be definitely more expensive. However, a cedar roof will last for many decades with little maintenance.

Start by finding out which is the most suitable location for constructing your shed. If you want to be able to access the shed easily, build it close to your home. But if you want it to be a calm and quiet place, you should construct it farther from your house. Clean out the area for the shed before you start construction, The actual size of your shed will depend upon the size of the available land.

Make some rough garden shed blueprints for the size and design of the shed. You can take the drawing to any DIY store and give them the specifications. They will help you draw the shed plans. They should also be able to give you a list of the materials needed for the construction of the storage shed. This will allow you to estimate the cost.

Buy all the required wood from the timber-yard. Make sure you give clear instruction to the storekeeper regarding where you want to unload the wood. Make sure the area is close to your construction site and also easily reachable for the truck which delivers the lumber. Keep the timber away from the ground and keep it dry. If the lumber is left of the ground it will easily get infected by pests like termites.

If you are planning on building a small storage shed like a 8 x 10 feet shed (free shed blueprints) , then make sure you build a good foundation. The foundation can be either concrete or wooden. Make sure that the foundation is strong, square and level. Mark down the land for building the foundation by driving stakes into the ground at the four corners. Lay down the lumber forming the frame of the foundation and make sure that each piece is at right angles to the adjacent piece. Lumber mills sometimes leave extra timber at the end of each piece to allow you to trim off the wood and fit it perfectly, so make sure each piece of wood is of the right length.

Once the floor is completed, you can start the construction of the walls. It would be easier if you assembled the walls on the floor and then hoisted them up into place and fastened the to the floor framing.

After the walls are finished, you can begin making the trusses for the roof after referring to you garden shed blueprints. Construct one truss and using it like a template cut out the remaining trusses and then nail shingles on them. You can install a metal drip edge along the slanting edge of the roof to protect it from water seepage during rains.

Lastly, give the shed a nice coat of varnish or paint to protect it from nature.
